EXPERIENCE

Marketing and Creative Director. I create and manage marketing programs for small businesses and web sites. This includes branding, market planning, print, banner, email, search and outdoor advertising and web site design, improvement and optimization. I am a very hands-on creative professional, executing much of the creative work myself and operating with low overhead, which results in low-cost, high-value strategic marketing for my clients. I also have a network of freelance graphic designers, copywriters and web programmers to extend my scope and capabilities when necessary.

Marketing Director. I co-founded, funded and managed a national eCommerce and marketing firm that was focused on high-retention subscription sales for the troubled newspaper industry. I conceived of and built the sales and marketing platform, the multimedia presentation and sales literature. I made presentations to c-level newspaper executives across the country while educating and training a national sales rep from the ground up. I wrote the marketing plan, budgets and client contracts. I managed client accounts, sold sponsorships and new business, and continually strove to improve internal processes. As senior partner, I oversaw all hiring and employee compensation/benefits for a staff of seven, delegated authority for daily office tasks such as AR, AP and invoicing, assumed responsiblity for any task that remained unattended and strove to direct all company resources toward the successful fulfillment of our marketing mission. I personally managed the work of all marketing and development staff. I led our distrubuted development team in the creation of our custom marketing software, and managed both internal and outsourced marketing staff in subscriber segmentation, AB testing, copywriting, landing page and ecommerce design, flash design/programming, permission-based email to over 100,000 targeted prospects, PPC search marketing campaigns, print advertising, banner advertising and marketing-driven online games and sweepstakes promotions for each of our 35 newspaper clients simultaneously. As always, I was a very hands-on creative professional, making use of my many skills in the actual production of all creative work mentioned above.

Online Marketing Manager.I founded and managed the subscription sales eCommerce department for The Mercury News. This included leveraging partnerships with television and radio stations, PPC search marketing, banner and text advertising, permission-based direct email programs and a partner network. Under my direction, the web channel increased from the sixth- to the second-largest source of new paid subscriptions, while achieving the lowest average Cost Per Order and the highest retention rate of any channel.

Marketing Art Director. I crafted strategic online, broadcast and print collateral, advertising and point-of-purchase that promoted the newspaper of Silicon Valley and its many products. I managed the projects from concept to delivery, and provided art direction to a stable of contract production artists, graphic designers, illustrators and photographers.

Creative Director/Owner. I provided fresh, twisted, rolled-in-salt graphic design, advertising, and illustration to corporations, web sites, radio stations and newspapers. I also assembled and managed freelance creative teams from a roster of copywriters, photographers and production artists. Clients included: San Jose Mercury News, Silicon Valley.com, BayAreaYellowPages.com, SacBee.com, Knight Ridder, San Jose Sharks, KJZY fm93.7, KZST fm100, and The Sacramento Bee.

Art Director. Our creative team dominated the local ADDY awards with successful print collateral, product identities, print campaigns, and illustrations. I not only designed and illustrated, I also managed my projects from brainstorm to press check, including market strategy, casting and client presentations.

Art Director. We were a tight-knit creative team focused on crafting innovative advertising, collateral and identities for otherwise boring clients in the medical, real estate and insurance industries. We won lots of awards and our clients made lots of money.

Graphic Designer then Assistant Art Director. My first advertising job was action-packed: I redesigned the national identity of a $2 Billion company, won my first ADDY for Caesar's Tahoe, and had a controversial outdoor campaign covered by Dan Rather on CBS Nightly News, and ADWEEK magazine. After my promotion, I designed our high-end projects. These included outdoor and print advertising, identity, brochures, posters, POP displays, trade show graphics and signage.
